Jane Austen praised by Ofsted in first inspection

Jane Austen College has been praised as a place where "excellence and endeavour are everyday expectations" by Ofsted.

The College received top marks in four out of five areas when inspectors visited in October.

The school, which only opened in 2014, was feted for its "ambitious target-setting, rigorous assessment, an excellent curriculum and good teaching", receiving an overall rating of Good.

During the Ofsted visit, the three inspectors visited 36 lessons, talked to students, staff, and parents, and looked at school paperwork and policies.

Their report quotes parents' praise for the College, including comments such as "since moving to Jane Austen, my child has become a confident learner and his academic work has improved past my expectation" and "after a miserable and difficult time at junior school, my child is so happy now and producing an amazing standard of work".

Inspectors found that pupils make "exceptional progress" and praised staff's "ambitious target-setting, rigorous assessment, an excellent curriculum and good teaching".

The report says leadership, personal development and behaviour, and pupil outcomes are all "outstanding", with the same ranking going to the College's sixth form.

In its first set of A Level results in August students achieved 91% A*-C grades, making it the top performing state sixth form in Norfolk.

Ofsted's report noted that "A higher proportion of students went on to university than is typically seen nationally. Almost half of them take up places in highly academic universities with the very highest entry tariffs."

University destinations this August included high-ranking universities like Warwick, York, Sheffield, and Leeds.

The school is part of the Inspiration Trust family of schools, and opened in September 2014 for just Year 7 and sixth form students, and is still growing as it takes on a fresh year group annually.

Executive principal Claire Heald said: "This is an amazing report for the College, and reflects the fantastic attitude and approach of our students and staff.

"We set out to do something different with Jane Austen College and provide high quality education for the city, and Ofsted have recognised that is exactly what we are doing.

"It is particularly pleasing to read the warm words from our pupils and parents, because our success is down to the wonderful support we receive from our whole school community."
