Training at Sir Isaac Newton Sixth Form

Sir Isaac Newton is offering teachers wishing to become maths specialists in Key Stage2, 3, and 4 a chance to undertake free Teacher Subject Specialist Training (TSST).

Our courses

In 2018/19 we will be running two courses: one aimed at teaching the primary maths curriculum, and one for the secondary maths curriculum. To achieve certification for either of these courses a minimum session attendance of 70% is required along with completion of the accreditation folder. More information on this will be provided at the first session.

The courses are split into 13 units, each focusing on a particular topic of the mathematics curriculum or a specific mathematical pedagogy. Emphasis, in particular, is placed on the key “golden threads” of excellent maths teaching: on the importance of conceptual understanding of topics, developing your knowledge of the connections between different mathematical topics, and providing you with an understanding of how to develop student’s fluency, reasoning and problem solving in maths. Our trainers will help you to understand the misconceptions that students face when learning mathematics to enable you to deliver the KS2, KS3, and 9-1 GCSE curricula with confidence.

Primary course

This free course is designed for the following teachers:

  • Primary teachers unsure about the maths curriculum content
